Tungsten electrodes are used for TIG welding and, thanks to tungsten’s extremely high melting temperature of about 3400°C, they allow to maintain the electric arc with the workpiece to be welded.
Various types exist, but usually to weld in AC alternating current, the most used is pure green tungsten. It is not sharpened and during welding it is rounded naturally.
On top-welding.com we recommend 10-pieces boxes of pure tungsten electrodes of different thicknesses, 1 - 1.6 - 2.4 and 3.2mm, which are the most requested sizes.
Since with this type of electrode it is possible to weld mainly aluminum, it is important to know how to adjust the welding machine in an optimal way to obtain a correct penetration and an excellent trigger.
In professional welding machines there is often a pre-heating function for the electrode that helps the operator in the ignition of the electric arc. In this heating function, it is important to select the thickness of the electrode in use to allow the welding machine electronics to adjust the parameters automatically.
There are also AC frequency adjustments that allow to tighten or widen the arc and the BALANCE function for greater or lesser elimination of oxidation from the piece.
As mentioned above, electrodes of different thicknesses are recommended according to the thickness of the base material to be welded and therefore according to the current used. Below we indicate the recommended amperages based on the diameter of the electrode.
Ø 1,0 mm from 10 to 50 A
Ø 1,6 mm from 40 to 80 A
Ø 2,0 mm from 60 to 110 A
Ø 2,4 mm from 80 to 150 A
Ø 3,2 mm from 100 to 200 A
Ø 4,0 mm from 150 to 250 A
Ø 5,0 mm from 200 to 350 A
Among the most important parameters to adjust on the control panel of the welder, we would like to mention the Post Gas function. After welding, when the torch button is released, the gas continues to exit the torch to cool and avoid oxidizing the tungsten and improve subsequent triggers. Below we indicate the recommended Post Gas settings according to the current used.

Tungsten electrodes are used for TIG welding and, thanks to tungsten’s extremely high melting temperature of about 3400°C, they allow to maintain the electric arc with the workpiece to be welded.
Various types exist, but usually for DC welding of iron and stainless steel, the most used is the grey waxed tungsten. It is important to sharpen it to obtain a precise and direct arc to the point to be welded.
On top-welding.com we recommend 10-pieces boxes of grey tungsten electrodes of different thicknesses, 1 - 1.6 - 2.4 and 3.2mm, which are the most requested sizes.
Depending on the thickness of the material to be welded, the welding current will be different and consequently also the tungsten diameter may vary; below we indicate the recommended currents according to thickness.
Tungsten electrode diameter
Ø 1,0 mm from 10 to 80 A
Ø 1,6 mm from 50 to 120 A
Ø 2,0 mm from 80 to 190 A
Ø 2,4 mm from 100 to 240 A
Ø 3,2 mm from 150 to 300 A
Ø 4,0 mm from 300 to 450 A
Ø 5,0 mm from 500 to 650 A
